Kingdom of Heaven

IMDb: 7.3/10

2005, Action, Adventure, Drama, History, War

United Kingdom, Germany, United States, R

Director: Ridley Scott

Top cast: Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Liam Neeson

Kingdom of Heaven is another adventure movie managed by Ridley Scott. This is a story of a 12th-century Crusade. The story expresses the establishment of Balian of Ibelin. Orlando Bloom plays him, and he is a blacksmith involved in the Holy Land's political and religious conflicts. The film is also an incredible journey from France to Jerusalem. Balian goes from a simple artisan to a noble knight as he protects the city from Sultan Saladin and his mighty forces, played by Ghassan Massoud. Ridley Scott's meticulous attention to detail shines through on the film's epic scale with the carefully rendered medieval cities, the large-scale battle sequences, and the stunning Siege of Jerusalem, perhaps the greatest-ever portrayal of a medieval battle put onto film. Even if it takes a few liberties with history, this movie is thought-provoking and visually stunning about faith, honor, and clashing cultures. If you're a fan of historical drama, and what's more, any grand tale battle scenes, Kingdom of Heaven will undoubtedly please you.

Robin Hood

IMDb: 6.6/10

2010, Animation, Action, Adventure USA, PG-13

Director: Ridley Scott

Top cast: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Matthew Macfadyen

Ridley Scott's Robin Hood is all too human and realistic in its relationship to the story of the legendary outlaw. Starring Russell Crowe as Robin Hood and Cate Blanchett as Lady Marian, it defines the origins of this particular hero. Crowe gives a rugged, real performance. This Marian, played by Blanchett, is strong and sympathetic. The visuals are stunning: the lush English countryside and grittily medieval settings. The action scenes are heavy with battle and impressively choreographed. Robin Hood is a must-see if you are into historical dramas and realistic portrayals of legendary stories.

Last Knights

IMDb: 6.2/10

2015, Animation, Action, Adventure United Kingdom, South Korea, Czech Republic, PG

Director: Kazuaki Kiriya

Top cast: Clive Owen, Morgan Freeman, Aksel Hennie

'Last Knights,' directed by Kazuaki Kiriya and debuted in 2015, is an action-adventure film where Raiden sets out to avenge his master Bartok. The film tells the story of Raiden (Clive Owen), a stalwart (he's a knight) who is loyal to a fault to his master, Lord Bartok (Morgan Freeman). After the master is framed and executed by a corrupt and power-hungry overlord (Aksel Hennie), Raiden will stop at nothing to catch the evil geez and pay him back. Not based on a specific historical event, Last Knights draws heavy inspiration from the legendary story of 47 Ronin, a celebrated Japanese tale of the loyalty and revenge of samurai. With a strong cast, an emotionally charged story, and a unique fusion of cultural influences, 'Last Knights' is a must-see. It's great for a movie night out with friends or family.

Last Knights

Braveheart

IMDb: 8.3/10

1995, Biography, Drama, War USA, R

Director: Mel Gibson

Top cast: Mel Gibson, Sophie Marceau, Patrick McGoohan

The next movie is a historical drama produced by and starring Mel Gibson — ‘Braveheart,’ based on events from the 13th century. Gibson plays a brave warrior from Scotland who rallies forces to clash with England. All this was allowed by the inspiring surroundings of beautiful Scottish landscapes and inspiring music by James Horner. The fight scenes are heavy and real, coming straight to the point. That's where one feels the hard evidence of medieval warfare. Even though it isn't a historically accurate account throughout, it makes for a great story of courage, love, and sacrifice.

Braveheart

The King

IMDb: 7.3/10

2019, Biography, Drama, History, Romance, War

United Kingdom, Hungary, USA, Australia, R

Director: David Michôd

Top cast: Timothée Chalamet, Joel Edgerton, Robert Pattinson

“The King” is a historical drama by David Michôd. The movie details how young prince Hal, played by Timothée Chalamet, became King Henry V of England during the early 1400s. Even though the film takes lots of creative license around historical events, visibly, it does an excellent job of handling themes revolving around the power, responsibility, and personalities of leadership. The story develops quickly and deeply in character development and political intrigue. ‘The King’ is highly recommended to anyone who likes a good historical drama or a Shakespearean story.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

IMDb: 6.7/10

2017, Action, Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

USA, United Kingdom, Australia, PG

Director: Guy Ritchie

Top cast: Charlie Hunnam, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Jude Law

This is an action film by Guy Ritchie about Arthur, who goes from a street dweller to a king. “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” stars Charlie Hunnam as Arthur, a scheming street rat raised amid the back alleys of Londinium with no sense of his royal parentage. Suddenly thrust face to face with the mystical sword Excalibur, he’s pushed into a journey of self-discovery, ascending from outlaw to legendary king fated to bring down the tyrannical Vortigern — played by Jude Law. A friendly villain in Vortigern is a power-hungry king who killed Arthur’s parents to inherit the throne and is an enemy blending political acumen with dark magic. The fresh dialogue and vigorous direction may not fit everyone's taste, but it gives new blood to the old legend in its funny way. If you enjoy action-fantasy movies with a modern twist, this movie is your best bet. It is a Guy Ritchie brainchild, bringing new blood into the legend of Arthur so that he is exciting and accessible for viewing today.
