2026 has been a strong, understated year for drama. These ten films are worth your time: love stories that earn their ending, stories about people at turning points, and at least two that are harder to place than they look.

People We Meet on Vacation
IMDb: 6.6/10
2026, Romance
USA
Director: Brett Haley
Top Cast: Emily Bader, Tom Blyth, Sarah Catherine Hook
The two leads could not be more different. She is a New York travel blogger who lives out of a suitcase and wants to see the whole world. He is a bookish introvert who dreams of a quiet evening at home. They met on a college bus and have been best friends ever since, despite living in different cities. For ten years, they spent every summer holiday together.
But two years ago, they stopped talking. Poppy keeps up appearances, but inside she feels a growing emptiness. When their mutual friend David invites her to a wedding in Barcelona, Poppy sees her chance. She works up the courage to message Alex again.
The film unfolds across two timelines. In the present, Poppy and Alex fly to Barcelona together again. In the past, flashbacks take us through each of their shared trips. Rome, Mexico, Las Vegas, late-night rooftop conversations. Together, these memories slowly reveal what both of them have been afraid to admit. There has always been something more between them than friendship.

Most people know this love story. It has been a fixture of popular culture for generations. No wonder. What unfolds on the wind-swept Yorkshire moors stays with you. You cannot retell it without pain.
Catherine Earnshaw grows up at Wuthering Heights, alongside her father’s adopted son: dark, brooding Heathcliff. From childhood, a thread connects them that time, distance, and other marriages cannot break.
When Catherine’s father dies, everything changes for Heathcliff. Her brother Hindley humiliates him and reduces him to a servant. Unable to bear the humiliation beside the woman he loves, Heathcliff disappears. Catherine, giving in to social pressure, marries their wealthy neighbour Edgar Linton.
Heathcliff returns years later: wealthy, hardened, and hungry for revenge. He buys Wuthering Heights, destroys the Linton family from within, and methodically dismantles everything that once took Catherine from him.
Their reunions are anything but tender. Their love looks more like an obsession that consumes them both.

She rents a room and finds work at a local bar. The owner, Ledger, treats her with unexpected kindness. Too much kindness, given that he was the best friend of the man she destroyed.
They reach an unspoken deal: he does not push her out, she does not disturb what he holds together. But the more they learn about each other, the harder it becomes to pretend this is just work. They carry the same pain.

Strange Arrivals
2026, Romance, Sci-Fi
USA
Director: Roger Ross Williams
Top Cast: Demi Moore, Colman Domingo
September, 1961. Betty and Barney Hill are driving home to New Hampshire after their honeymoon in Niagara Falls. On a dark road, something overtakes their car.
They cannot account for the next few hours. When they finally reach home, their clocks run two hours ahead. Their clothes are torn. Their bodies ache as if they were beaten, but they remember nothing.
Under hypnosis, each tells the same story, independent of the other. Grey figures. A bright light. Medical procedures aboard an unknown craft. The Hills became the first documented case of alien abduction in American history. Their story changed the public conversation about UFOs forever.
But Strange Arrivals is first a love story. Betty and Barney lived in 1960s America, where their marriage was already a provocation. Interracial couples faced hatred and suspicion. What happened that night only added to the weight they carried.

Nomad
2026, Adventure, Drama, Romance
USA
Director: Taron Lexton
Top Cast: Leo Woodall, Sana’a Shaik, Jordi Webber, Abbey Hoes
Many people will recognise something in this story, especially those who travel a lot for work.
The main character has no name. Every twelve hours, something moves him to a different place on Earth. He falls asleep in Tokyo and wakes up in Buenos Aires. Then Nairobi. Then somewhere in Alaska. He gets no warning. He makes no choice. He cannot stay even if he wants to. He stopped making plans a long time ago. His only task now is to survive wherever he lands, for a few hours at a time.
In one city, he crosses paths with a girl. She lives a routine life. Their encounter is an accident. But something makes them both stop. He cannot explain who he is or why he will not be here tomorrow. She cannot explain why a person she barely knows feels like something she should not walk away from.

2026, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy
USA
Director: Susanne Bier
Top Cast: Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Joey King
Twenty-five years have passed since the Owens sisters defeated the dark forces. For the first time, they let themselves believe the curse was broken. Sally lives quietly in the old house. Her children have grown up. Gillian is still unpredictable. The worst, it seems, is behind them.
Then Sally’s daughter begins to show abilities that frighten even the most seasoned witches in the Owens line. Her magic runs darker than it should. She reaches for secrets the family deliberately buried.
The girl keeps digging and discovers that the curse goes deeper than anyone told her. It has roots in something Sally and Gillian chose to keep hidden. To break the curse, they must get to its source, not just clean up what it leaves behind. The sisters must come together and face a part of their history that no one wanted to touch.

The Drama
2026, Comedy, Drama, Romance
USA
Director: Kristoffer Borgli
Top Cast: Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Alana Haim
They are happy. Or so it seems to them. A young couple is preparing for their wedding. The venue is booked. The outfits are chosen. The guests are invited. With a week to go, all that remains are the last details. Everything feels ready.
Then one conversation changes everything. Not a disaster from outside. A shift from within. The couple suddenly has to ask questions both of them had been avoiding. Why are they together? What do they really know about each other? Do they want the same things?
The film plays out as a dark comedy: sharp, sometimes cruel. Every exchange shows how little they understand each other.
