The black-and-white hit by Polish-British director Paweł Pawlikowski tells the story of life in post-war Poland. A cultured musician and conductor named Wiktor decides to form a folk music ensemble. During this process, he meets a talented village singer named Zula and dreams of escaping to the West with her. Over nearly 15 years, they come together and part ways under different circumstances across Europe — from Warsaw to Berlin, from bohemian Paris to provincial Belgrade. Is it a deep love, or simply an inability to accept that they aren’t meant to be together? The love story between Wiktor and Zula is inspired by the real-life story of the director’s parents. The characters in this melodrama even bear their names.
